[Local/News] Alerts and WARNINGS

The Internet can be a wonderful piece of technology, helping friends, families and businesses throughout the world. There are many uses, but these are more common ways of using the internet:

• Contacts: keeping in touch with family and friends.

• Business: making new and contacting clients, etc.

• Reports: being able to contact certain organizations/agencies, to make official statements and reports. The most common of these are: police, children's services, beneficiary/welfare services and various others.

• Updates: being able to update your information. Or, receiving updated information.

But, the Internet can also be a dangerous place - helping criminals, perverts and paedophiles to keep tabs on others, or to do illegal crimes such as:

• Hacking: your computers, devices, accounts, bank accounts, profiles, identification and more.

• Stalking: tracking or keeping an eye on someone, without their knowledge.

When we receive a warning, we usually adhere to it - as it would obviously mean the difference between life and death, while others are for our safety and well-being.

There are many types of Alerts:

• Ringtones
• Message tones
• Email tones
• Weather
• Update(s) and many various others.

Warnings can come in many different ways and can also be used in different ways:

• Weather - natural or unnatural.

• Traffic - usually the driving conditions, or to warn of an accident ahead.

Whatever the alert or warning may be, it would only be to protect everyone. In Australia of the year 2005, a alert/warning message circulated the country about the current riots in Cronulla. There were two types of warnings:

"For the safety of your friends and family, please stay away from the area/location".

And the most circulated and popular message that was sent and received:

"Protect Our way of Life. These are our beaches and they will not be taken from us. Join us now, in protecting our way of life".

The text was asking for the community to come and make a stand.

The riots had split the country into two major factors of land and sea. Those who grew up or were raised near the beach and those who weren't. It was also surprising to see other nationalities joining the Australian side. A whole bus load of pacific islanders, drove from Mt Druitt to Cronulla in support of the beaches. It is understandable why they'd want to protect the beaches, they 're from islands surrounded by the beach coast.

During this time, there were many surprising yet dangerous outcomes. A young man of middle-eastern appearance was brutally attacked by five Australian men. After arrests were made and cultural differences were sort - apologies were made.

Something so small and trivial can be turned into something big and ugly. It was a fine example of how fast things can escalate from minimal to maximum problems. The Cronulla Riots were a lesson for us all, but they were also a warning to others "we will protect our way of life". It originally began when a couple of middle-eastern men were caught going through people's bags and stealing their belongings.

The weather hasn't been too good lately, while some countries are suffering natural disasters because of it. Some Australian towns have prepared for the next warning, as too many natural disasters have occurred - fires, floods, etc. In the past year, New Zealand's Christchurch has been hit by devastating earthquakes. After the first quake and continuous aftershocks, kiwis began rebuilding their lives. Then, devastation took it's toll and hit Christchurch again. Warning systems we're installed, but there was no warning of what would happen afterwards - the lives that were lost and the trauma that has been left with their community.

In recent weeks, there have been numerous texts, phone calls and emails which warn us of the next danger. But unfortunately, it is not a natural disaster or an unknown force.

As I end this article Today in the world, we face the dangers of:

• Abusers - violence, substance, etc.

• Criminals

• Paedophiles

• Personal - crimes against yourself or your family, against/in your home, and many more.

• Rapists

• Stalkers

Current Warnings in Australia:

• Anonymous Email Reports - where the person reporting, is named.

• Text/Video - dangerous people amongst the community.

• Hacking - profiles, social networking sites, accounts and bank accounts.

• Skimming - when using an ATM, a machine was installed to capture account information, pin numbers and more personal details.

• Identification - your personal information is being stolen and sold.
